Andrew Sleigh from Ellon, Aberdeenshire, travelled to Yorkshire to judge this years entry of Salers. Peter Donger secured the overall championship at the Royal Welsh Show today under judge Rob Livesey from the Cleuchhead herd. A good show of cattle was put before judge Alistair Mackenzie of Whitebog Salers, Fortrose at the Royal Highland Show. Junior female champion was Cleuchhead Gentle 23rd from the Livesey family, Scottish Borders. Sired by Drumlegagh Brandon she out of Cleuchhead Gentle 10th, born March 2013. Reserve interbreed group at Balmoral Show
The Salers continued a fantastic show at Balmoral as our group of three took the reserve interbreed title under Simmental breeder and judge Billy Robson. The group consisted of the breed champion Gladiateur from John Elliot, who was joined by the reserve breed champion Carrick View Heloise from George McCall and then John Elliot’s French-bred cow Unity.
Senior bull wins overall champion at Balmoral Show
Taking the overall championship today at Balmoral Show under judge Dennis Rogers was the French bred Gladiateur from John Elliot. This 2011-born Vermieill son is out of Victoire, he was purchased privately last year from breeder Patrick Malacan. John who runs 65 pure cows has only been beaten in the Salers championship once since classes started for the breed at Balmoral. Judge George McCall travelled from Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, to see a wonderful line up of Salers cattle at the 155th great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate. Drumlegagh herd clinches Balmoral championship
Peter Donger travelled from Northamptonshire to place the Salers cattle at the recent Balmoral Show, selecting as his Supreme Champion an outstanding young bull from the Drumlegagh herd of John Elliott and family, Newtownstewart. Drumlegagh Felix was hailed an exceptional example of the breed by the judge, and went on to be placed second reserve in the Junior Interbreed Championships when competing against twelve other breeds. Jock Watson judged the Salers classes at the Nottingham County Show. This was the first time Salers had their own classes having previously shown in Any Other Continental Breed. Salers take reserve championship spot at Driffield Show
Salers exhibited at the Driffield Show (Wed 18th July 2012) by Angus and Kerry Gowthorpe, and by Carolyn Fox achieved considerable success in the largest and most demanding classes of the show. Despite having as many entries forward as did the Charolais and Simmental breeds, the Salers competed in the Any Other Pure Beef Breeds classes. Despite the show being cancelled after the first day due to the weather, the cattle show classes did take place, albeit in rather wet, muddy judging rings! Unfortunately no show classes at this years Royal Welsh Show. Breeders in Wales need to plan ahead so we can try get the classes re-instated in 2012. Bryan Wallings’ young heifer Cumbrian Hyacinth 456 (Sire: Jaguar, Dam: Upperland Hyacinth 373) caught judge Graham Fishlock’s eye at this years Royal Highland Show, winning as Best Junior Female, Junior Champion and overall Show Champion.
